Moving the wheelie bin out onto your pavement so that the bin men can collect your rubbish is a regular chore for Londoners every fortnight.

The wheelie bin as we know it was first created in 1968 by a man called Frank Rotherham Mouldings while working for a company from Slough and it was invented to transport waste from one part of a factory to another. A visiting health inspector saw the design in use and realised that it could be employed across the country for different applications.

Rubbish collectors often suffered back strain and injuries when moving conventional waste bins. Wheelie bins proved more convenient as they offer as much space as a normal bin but can be transported by easily pulling on the wheels, rather than having to lift and carry.

Wheelie bins came into their own in the late 1980s when rubbish lorries began utilising technology that automatically lifted and tipped the bin to deposit the waste. Because wheelie bins revolutionised and streamlined the job of the refuse collector, rubbish collectors’ clothing changed. Formerly, they wore tough and expensive donkeys jacket to protect the back which was then no longer needed.
